Escape to Paradise Escape @ Edgewater
Did you know that the world’s most beautiful beach is now a great place to snorkel and experience the Gulf of Mexico’s underwater sea life too? A brand-new artificial snorkel reef has been built in the shallows immediately off Miramar Beach at the Miramar Beach Regional Beach Access (#49). Dolphin Snorkel Reef consists of approximately 60 individual reef modules arranged in the shape of a Bottlenose dolphin. The reef network is located within swimming and paddling distance of shore and at a depth of ~20 feet. In the short time that the reef has been in place it has rapidly become encrusted with marine life and has become home to numerous species of fish, crustaceans, sea turtles. In keeping with its namesake, the reef is a frequent stop hangout for the area’s population of dolphins. Visitors can spot the reef from the parking area and walkover and signs on the beach help orient snorkelers for their swim out to the reef. Snorkelers can visit the reef on their own or book a guided snorkel tour with one of the areas snorkel tour companies. Dolphin Snorkel Reef is just one of four new snorkel reefs created and cared for by the South Walton Artificial Reef Association (SWARA). The other three snorkel reefs are located along Scenic Highway 30-A. Cobia Snorkel Reef at Inlet Beach, Turtle Snorkel Reef at Grayton Beach State Park, and Seahorse Snorkel Reef at Topsail Hill Preserve State Park complete the network. In addition to the snorkel reefs, SWARA has created or proposed a dozen more nearshore artificial reef sites located in deeper water. These are dual-use sites serving both SCUBA divers and fishermen. Charts and complete information on all SWARA artificial reef sites can be found at swarareefs.org.
